According to a recent report from Bristol Post, Celtic are still being linked with a move for Bristol City winger Niclas Eliasson. Along with the Hoops, Lazio and Burnley are also said to be in the mix. The report mentions that more clubs could join the race for him in the summer. It further adds that Eliasson is unwilling to sign a new contract.
The Robins had an option to trigger a year long extension, and they have done that. Hence, the winger is not going to be available on a free transfer in the summer. Eliasson meanwhile is not keen to extend his stay further, and he is likely to leave in the summer.
Celtic were linked (Daily Record) with Eliasson in the January transfer market, but the move didn’t materialise. Bristol City are fighting to get into the Championship playoffs, and they currently occupy the seventh spot on the table.
Why Celtic need a winger?
We expect the Hoops to sign a new winger in the summer after they allowed Scott Sinclair and Lewis Morgan to depart in January. Lennon was looking to bring in a new winger, but the move for Christian Atsu fell through (Daily Record) in the last few hours of the winter window. Hence, it is no surprise that Lennon is still monitoring someone like Eliasson.
What can Niclas Eliasson bring at Parkhead?
The 24-year-old has had a decent season for the Robins as he has contributed with three goals and 12 assists in 27 Championship games so far. Eliasson is a left-footed winger who can play on both the flanks. The Swedish ace’s standout feature is his pace and ability to go past players. There is no doubt for those who have seen him play that his blistering speed could trouble the defenders in the Premiership as well.
Eliasson’s consistent attacking contributions shows that he also has the final product to his game which some wingers lack sometimes. However, he could struggle a bit in terms of physicality in the Premiership. His shooting ability also needs improving.
What should be Lennon’s play?
Eliasson would be a decent signing at Parkhead. However, we believe that Celtic should look to sign Mohamed Elyounoussi permanently in the summer. The Southampton ace is likely going to cost more, but he seems to be the real deal as he has settled in well at Parkhead. If Lennon fails to get Elyounoussi, then the manager should consider returning for Christian Atsu. Eliasson is third in the pecking order for us at the moment, and Celtic should sign him if they fail to bring either of Elyounoussi or Atsu.
