According to a recent report by The Daily Mail, Barcelona are weighing up a move to acquire the signature of Angel Rodriguez from Getafe. The same source has also revealed that the Catalans will have to get permission to sign the Spanish striker outside the transfer window after both Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele were ruled out of action for the remainder of this campaign.
Rodriguez’s Prolific Season At Getafe So Far
Quique Setien currently has an injury-crisis in his hands after Dembele fell victim to a hamstring injury which will see him miss the rest of this La Liga campaign. Barca are now desperate to sign a new striker and will make a move for Angel Rodriguez if they are allowed to sign a new player. However, the Spanish champions must recruit a player who is already playing in Spain or who is currently unemployed, so that Setien can use him in the UEFA Champions League this season (via The Daily Mail).
The 32-year-old has featured in 27 matches for Getafe this term, scoring 13 goals while creating one assist in all competitions. He has averaged 1.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in the Spanish top-flight (stats via whoscored).
However, the ex-Levante attacker is yet to earn his first senior cap for the Spanish national side so the jury is still out on whether he will be able to prove himself against the best players at the highest level.
What Will The La Liga Forward Bring To Catalunya?
The veteran forward has decent pace under his belt and can make some driving runs with the ball in the final third. He is also a lethal finisher in front of goal and packs a lot of power with his attempts. However, he can be a bit fragile physically and could go through a dry spell when he is not playing with confidence on the field.
Will Angel Rodriguez Be A Good Option For Setien?
Barca will be taking a huge gamble if they are allowed to sign the Spaniard. Still, with no fit centre-forwards currently at Setien’s disposal at the Nou Camp, the Barca boss will have no choice but to opt for the Getafe talent before the Champions League knockout stages resume later this month.
For now, it seems like Angel Rodriguez will be an excellent, short-term addition to the Catalans squad but only time will tell whether he will be able to handle the expectations of playing for a top club like Barcelona.
