According to a recent report from the Mirror, Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Wigan Athletic’s left-back Antonee Robinson. It is believed that Villa will be in the market to sign a new fullback in the summer. Chelsea and Newcastle United are also said to be interested.
Wigan might be struggling at the back end of the table in the Championship, but Robinson has earned rave reviews for his performances this season. The American ace was close to moving to AC Milan in January as Wigan had agreed a £10m fee for him. However, the move fell through as there wasn’t enough time to get the deal over the line.
Robinson joined the Latics in the summer of 2019 from Everton for £1.98m. Wigan almost made a massive profit on him in just six months. The opportunity to sell him hasn’t gone yet as Robinson is now attracting more interest with Premier League clubs becoming aware of his talent.
The left-back situation at Villa Park
Aston Villa’s transfer plans for the summer is likely going to depend on which division they might play in the next season. We don’t see them signing Robinson if they head back to the Championship with Premier League clubs interested in his signature.
Villa signed Matt Targett in the summer who can play as a left-back or a left wing-back, and he is currently the first-choice starter. 31-year-old Neil Taylor is the other alternative for Dean Smith. Taylor has started just eight games in the Premier League this campaign, and it is clear that the manager doesn’t rate him much.
The Welsman has his contract at the club until 2021, and we believe that Villa should look to part ways with Taylor in the summer. However, things could change if the Birmingham based side go down to the Championship as in that scenario someone like Targett could demand a move away.
What can Robinson add at Villa Park?
The 22-year-old is an American u-23 international. Robinson is known for his blistering pace and acceleration. Not many would be able to keep up with him when he runs at full tilt. Robinson is also a capable fullback when it comes to tackling and intercepting as he is usually willing to put his body on the line. The fullback averaged 2.3 tackles and 2 interceptions per game this season. (via Whoscored)
Robinson might have to improve on his passing range and ability to hold on the ball under pressure. He has quick feet and nice dribbling skills to go past players. The Wigan man has the raw ingredients to thrive in the English top-flight, and he needs a bit of tactical awareness and experience under his belt to thrive.
He would be a decent addition for Villa in the summer, but it remains to be seen whether Smith would be able to keep his side up in the Premier League or not. If not, then Robinson is unlikely to move to a Championship outfit when he has top-flight clubs knocking on his door.
