According to a recent exclusive report by i News, German star Mesut Ozil’s agent has confirmed that the midfielder will not be moving away from the Emirates Stadium this summer and that he is set on seeing out his contract with the Gunners. The former Real Madrid man’s current tenure in North London runs until the end of the 2020/21 league campaign, and the player’s agent has now confirmed that he will remain at the Emirates at least for that duration.
“At the moment, we don’t even talk about it, because he still has one-and-a-half-years left. Until then, he will stay for sure, he will stay until the end of the contract, there’s no chance he’ll leave”, Özil’s agent, Dr Erkut Sögüt said. The midfielder had a tough start to the season under the tutelage of Unai Emery, who froze the German out of the squad. Since Arteta’s takeover though, the veteran has been a regular in the side.
What Are The Concerns Surrounding Mesut Ozil?
It’s quite clear to see that the German isn’t the same player that he was a few years ago, and the lack of influence he shows in fixtures nowadays is undoubtedly one of the biggest areas of concern. The midfielder just seems to lack the energy and dynamism required to excel in Premier League football for ninety minutes. Often seen casually strolling around the pitch, his recent display against Olympiacos at the Emirates was a perfect example of just that.
The 31-year-old has the quality required to guide this Arsenal team in the right direction, but there’s been a lack of conviction in his play all season. The German has scored just one goal all campaign, despite having already made 17 league appearances. He possesses an impressive pass completion rate of 88% on paper, but considering all the players ahead of him on that list, it’s clear that the midfielder has been far from his best this season.
Moreover, the German’s attacking contributions have dried up heavily this season as well. For all the hype that the midfielder gets as a player, the worrying fact is that he’s picked up one assist all term. The veteran averages just one cross, one dribble and one long ball every game, while another point of concern for Arsenal fans will be that the former Madrid man only gets a shot on goal once every other fixture.
Why Keeping Ozil In The Books Would Be A Massive Arsenal Blunder.
The former German international earns somewhere in the region of £350,000 every week, meaning that the midfielder’s services are costing the Gunners almost £1.5m every month. Effectively, the North London club are spending £18m every year on just Ozil’s wages. This highlights the sheer ridiculousness of the German’s contract at the Emirates Stadium and proves that the Gunners will do well to offload Ozil at the earliest possible opportunity, and in turn, use the funds to build a squad that can actually challenge for titles.
