Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona side crashed out of the Spanish Supercoppa on Thursday night after losing the semifinal of the competition to La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid by a 3-2 scoreline. Although the Catalan side were in complete control and led the game 2-1 at one point, some radical changes from Diego Simeone tipped it in Atletico Madrid’s favour. The Blaugrana goals were scored by Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, while Alvaro Morata, Koke and Angel Correa found the net for Los Rojiblancos.
Here are the Barcelona players rated in their defeat Vs Atletico Madrid.
Neto – 6
Should have gotten a stronger hand to the Angel Correa winner and was responsible for giving the penalty away as well. Despite this, the shot-stopper made multiple key saves in the second half.
Sergi Roberto – 6
The full-back was forced to do a lot of defending but tried to foray forward whenever possible. He was put under a lot of pressure in the late stages as the Atleti onslaught began.
Gerard Pique – 5.5
The Spanish veteran definitely had a night to forget as he was overrun continuously in the second half. Allowed runners through the heart of defence but had a goal disallowed for offside.
Samuel Umtiti – 5
Like his centre-half partner, the Frenchman struggled to provide any sort of defensive cover in the second half as Atleti were given a free pass into the Barcelona final third.
Jordi Alba – 6.5
Used his pace well in the first half and similarly began the second half. His energy dried up late on though, and he struggled to keep up with the tempo that Atletico Madrid were operating at.
Sergio Busquets – 6.5
The midfielder did well to keep the ball circulating with his movement and passing in the first half. His influence began to dwindle after the Blaugrana took the lead in the second period though.
Arturo Vidal – 7.5
The Chilean international midfielder was a constant bundle of energy in the middle of the park, and he worked tirelessly from the opening minutes of the game. Made some excellent runs into space as well.
Frenkie De Jong – 6
The young Dutchman wasn’t at his best on the night because of the stop-start nature of the game. He passed the ball around well but did have his usual impact in the final third.
Lionel Messi – 7
The Argentine superstar scored the Catalan giants’ equaliser and even had a beautiful goal disallowed through offside. Tried his best to make something happen in the final minutes.
Luis Suarez – 6.5
Sent in a thundering header which was expertly saved by Oblak, only for it to then fall for Griezmann. Made some smart runs into the box but wasn’t able to beat the Atletico shot-stopper.
Antoine Griezmann – 5.5
The Frenchman was in the right place at the right time to head in one of the easiest goals he’s ever going to score in his career. Didn’t offer too much other than that going forward.
