According to a recent report by Gazzetta dello Sport, AS Roma have agreed to secure the services of Elche midfield ace Gonzalo Villar in a €5m deal. It is believed that the Spanish talent was in attendance during Roma’s 1-1 draw in the Rome Derby against Lazio last Sunday (via Gianluca Di Marzio).
Alicante Plaza had reported earlier this month that Everton reached out to the La Liga 2 side to register their interest in the Spanish midfielder. Still, it now seems like Carlo Ancelotti will miss out on the player with the Stadio Olimpico his most likely destination this month.
Villar’s Excellent Spell In The Segunda Division
The 22-year-old has managed to establish himself as a regular starter in Juan José Rojo Martín’s first team this season and has featured heavily for them in the Spanish second division. He has made 22 appearances for the Segunda Division outfit this term, scoring one goal while picking up nine yellow cards in the process.
Villar has also featured in three matches for the Spanish Under-21 side but is yet to earn his first senior cap for his country. The 21-year-old has improved his overall game considerably since leaving Valencia as a free agent in the summer of 2018.
What Does The Talented Spaniard Offer On The Field?
Villar is a deceptively quick midfielder who can make some dangerous, driving runs with the ball in the opposition half. He excels at interchanging crisp, short passes with others around him and can work his socks off for the benefit of his team. The Spanish prospect possesses the incredible vision to pick out a killer pass in the attacking third of the pitch.
Villar Set To Join AS Roma This Month: Big Blow For The Toffees?
Villar would have been a decent long-term addition to the Toffees squad so missing out on him will be a huge blow for Carlo Ancelotti and his future plans at Goodison Park.
Even the most ardent Everton fan knows that the Merseyside club needs to recruit some quality players if they want to break into the Premier League’s Top 6 spots in the coming years.
