According to the reports from Manchester Evening News, Harry Kane is being considered as one of the potential replacements for Sergio Aguero. The other is Inter Milan’s striker Lautaro Martinez. City have reportedly started to look for Aguero’s replacement behind the scenes. However, they are still reluctant to make a concrete move as they want to allow Aguero to decide his exit strategy.
26-year-old Harry Kane has emerged as the talismanic man for Spurs over the last few years, and he is now the captain for both club and country. Aguero has been compared with Kane in the past few seasons, and both have been instrumental for their sides.
Aguero still going strong
Aguero recently went on to become the highest-scoring foreigner in the Premier League going past Thierry Henry. The Argentine is still bagging goals for City and remains a first-team starter over Gabriel Jesus. Many assumed that with Guardiola’s intense playing style, Jesus might become the first choice striker by now.
However, Aguero has continued to show his class in front of goal even though he has struggled with various minor injuries. The South American’s ace’s contract expires in the summer of 2021.
Why are City unlikely to get Kane?
Kane would undoubtedly be a top pick for City to replace Aguero. However, he will likely cost a bomb, and Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho might not be keen to sanction a move for him to their direct rivals. Hence, it is hard to see Kane playing in the Premier League for any other side in the future given the way the Tottenham fans revere him.
Nevertheless, Kane has emerged as one of the possible replacement options. The Englishman is being seen as a more complete player in the last few seasons as he can contribute more even when he doesn’t score goals. His hold up play and defensive work rate have been improving, and the England ace remains as lethal as ever in and around the penalty box. Kane can come up short to help his team, or he can make runs between the channels. His link-up play is an underrated aspect of his game, and he seems to have everything to his game to thrive as the main forward at Manchester City.
However, City would be lucky to get him especially now that Jose Mourinho is the manager of Spurs. The Portuguese boss will be aware that he needs to build his team around Kane to take Spurs to the next level. Until the Englishman starts pushing for a move, Kane is unlikely to depart to City from Tottenham. File this under ‘Not Happening’ if you ask us.
