According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £28 million deal with AC Milan to sign Krzysztof Piatek. It is believed that the forward is set to sign a three and a half year deal with the Lilywhites and could complete a medical within the next 48 hours. Spurs will pay an initial fee of £23.8 million while £4.8 million could come in add ons.
Has Piatek done enough to earn a Tottenham move?
Piatek rose into prominence following an incredible start to his Genoa career. He scored 13 goals in 19 matches during the first half of last season before sealing a move to Milan in January. He netted a respectable nine goals in 18 games since joining the Italian giants.
This season, however, Piatek has struggled to impress the onlookers, especially with so many managerial turnovers. The Pole has fired in only four times in 18 matches. His inconsistency in front of goal has emerged as a key reason behind Milan’s dreadful start to the campaign, with the Rossoneri dawdling on the wrong end of the table.
But then again, the departure of Gennaro Gattuso, the sacking of Marco Giampaolo and the arrival of Stefano Pioli has had a deep impact behind the overall performance of the forward. Pioli, in particular, hasn’t favoured the Pole as much. As a result, he has struggled to find the back of the net consistently.
Can Piatek solve Tottenham’s problems?
Piatek’s arrival at Tottenham will serve as a sigh of relief for Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese mastermind was dealt with a massive blow earlier this month as Harry Kane has been ruled out until April with a hamstring injury. His absence could create an enormous void in the attacking department.
And just like last season, Tottenham may once again be forced to employ Son Heung-Min or Lucas Moura in a central role. Piatek, in that regard, could provide Mourinho with a viable alternative for Kane in the number nine slot.
Unlike Son and Moura, the 24-year-old is a fully-fledged forward. His ability to sniff chances and find scoring opportunities could make him an ideal fit to Mourinho’s defence-oriented tactical setup at Tottenham.
Moreover, Piatek has a bright scoring record in one of Europe’s top five leagues. And although it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to replicate his performances in the Premier League, his addition could only revamp Spurs’ attacking department as they look to challenge for the top four this season.
