According to a recent report by Gianluca di Marzio, Tottenham Hotspur have identified Chelsea centre-forward, Olivier Giroud as a potential target for this winter transfer window. It is believed that Spurs will attempt to lure the veteran goal-getter to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the end of this month (via Gianluca di Marzio). The same source has also revealed that the North London outfit are willing to offer the ex-Arsenal striker a one-and-a-half-year contract at the English capital.
Giroud’s Frustrations At West London This Season
The French forward has been a sporadic feature for Frank Lampard’s side this season after only managing to earn 282 minutes of playing time so far. He has made seven appearances for the Pensioners this term, scoring one goal across all competitions. He has averaged 0.6 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.6 clearances per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The 33-year-old also helped France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup and has already proven his worth as a serial winner in European football. He still has a few years left in him to play at a high level, so Spurs could still benefit from his presence in their dressing room.
Giroud is vastly experienced at the international level, having represented Les Bleus in 97 matches while scoring 39 goals for his country in the process.
What Does The France International Offer On The Pitch?
Even though Giroud has lost a yard of pace from his game, he can still be a menacing presence in the final third. The French marksman excels at holding the ball up and getting others involved in and around the opposition penalty area. Furthermore, he tends to score most of his goals with his head and is also a potent goal-threat from long range.
An Approach For Giroud This Month: Reeks Of Desperation Or A Practical Solution?
The acquisition of an experienced and quality striker like Giroud will be a massive coup for Jose Mourinho as he looks to salvage what has so far been a disappointing campaign for the North London giants. Tottenham are still in with an outside chance to clinch a top 4 place at the end of this campaign. They are also fighting in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, so Mourinho could use another fresh face up top so that he can keep Heung-min Son, Delle Alli and Lucas Moura honest in the first-team.
With the fixtures coming thick and fast for Spurs in the coming months, Giroud’s potential addition seems like a practical one as he will be able to fill in during Harry Kane’s injury absence. Even if Mourinho fails to land the French striker, he will still have plenty of attacking options in his squad to last the whole season.
