According to Record, as cited by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in the services of Robin Koch. The SC Freiburg defender has gained a lot of attention following his consistent performances in the Bundesliga. However, the Lilywhites could face stiff competition from Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt in pursuit of Koch.

Koch’s success at Freiburg

Koch has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. He has been an ever-present figure in the Freiburg defence that has conceded only 24 goals in the league this season – a tally only bettered by six other clubs, five of which are in the top six of the current Bundesliga table.

The 23-year-old has built a solid defensive partnership alongside the likes of Dominique Heintz and Philipp Lienhart. As a result, Freiburg have enjoyed a bright start to the campaign. The club from the black forest are currently seventh in the current league table, ahead of clubs like VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim.

And having already collected 29 points from 18 matches, the German outfit has more or less confirmed their Bundesliga status next season, which is quite extraordinary given the fact that they were expected to get relegated before the start of the campaign.

Is Koch a viable target for Tottenham?

Signing Koch might not be a bad option for Tottenham Hotspur given their imminent need of a centre-back. Indeed, Jan Vertonghen is already in the final phase of the career while Toby Alderweireld, despite being an ever-present figure in the Spurs backline, has deteriorated over the past six months.

Meanwhile, younger defenders like Davinson Sanchez have struggled with consistency while Juan Foyth has barely been utilised by Jose Mourinho. Koch, in that regard, should provide the Portuguese mastermind with an additional option in the rearguard.

Koch’s imposing 1.92m frame could give Tottenham the physical and aerial superiority – making it easier for them to deal with teams that play with a target-man. Another key aspect of the German’s gameplay is his ability to thread long balls from deeper positions, thus enhancing the build-up play.

But more importantly, Koch is known for his versatility. Despite being labelled as a centre-back, the Freiburg star can also feature as a defensive midfielder. That means he can surely add the much-needed quality to the Tottenback backline after their recent struggles in the Premier League this season – making him a viable target for the Lilywhites.
