According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Southampton are set to complete the loan acquisition of Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kyle Walker-Peters today. The same source has also stated that the two clubs have agreed on a deal which would see the English defender move to the South-coast of England for the remainder of this campaign.
Walker-Peters’ Frustrations At North London This Season
The 22-year-old has found game time hard to come by at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season after featuring in just five matches for the North London giants so far. He has only earned 422 minutes of playing time which has hampered his development on the field.
Walker-Peters has averaged 2.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 2.0 clearances per game for Spurs in this campaign (stats via whoscored). He has also represented England at various youth levels but is yet to earn his first senior call-up for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions side.
A loan move to St. Mary’s Stadium could help Walker-Peters make a late push towards being under consideration for a place in the England squad for UEFA Euro 2020 which is set to kick off later this summer.
What Will The English Defensive Ace Add To Hasenhüttl’s Side?
Walker-Peters has decent pace under his belt and is a good dribbler with the ball down the right flank. He shows tremendous balance to glide past players out on the wide areas but needs to improve his productivity in the final third if he wants to become a household name in the Premier League.
Bringing In Walker-Peters On Loan This Month: Shrewd Move By The Saints?
The acquisition of Walker-Peters, even if it is temporarily, will be a clever move by Ralph Hasenhüttl as he looks to lead his team to a top-half finish in the Premier League table. He will add some much-needed cover for the full-back positions which might help the South-coast club compete in the FA Cup with a crucial fourth-round showdown versus Tottenham Hotspur looming on the horizon.
Walker-Peters can also use his loan spell at Southampton as a learning experience which could make or break his career in English football.
