According to a recent report by The Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move to acquire the services of Danny Ings from Southampton during this January transfer window. It is understood that the recent injury to Harry Kane has increased Spurs’ need to bring in a new forward before the end of this month with the English striker one of the names in Jose Mourinho’s wishlist (via The Daily Star).
Kane’s hamstring injury could keep him sidelined until April and so the North London giants need more firepower up top if they want to compete for a top 4 place in the business end of this Premier League campaign. Furthermore, Spurs are still in the UEFA Champions League with a mouth-watering two-legged tie against Red Bull Leipzig looming on the horizon. Therefore, recruiting a striker of Ings’ experience could prove to be a clever move for Mourinho in the short-term.
Ings’ Incredible Goal-Scoring Record At Southampton This Season
The English marksman has been playing some of the best football of his career under Ralph Hasenhüttl’s tutelage at the South-coast club. He has scored 16 goals and grabbed one assist in 24 appearances for the Saints across all competitions.
Ings has averaged 2.6 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored). He has also earned one senior cap for the England national team.
Why The Saints Cannot Afford To Sanction Ings’ Departure In January
Ings is a natural finisher in front of the opposition goal and has made a name for himself for converting chances consistently in the final third. He loves to operate off the shoulders of the last defender so that he can beat the off-side trap by making well-timed runs towards the opposition penalty area. The 27-year-old has also proven his worth as a prolific goal-scorer in the Premier League as long as he can stay healthy and injury-free.
However, injuries had ravaged his spell with Liverpool, so there are some question marks over whether he can succeed at a top club where the spotlight is always on him. Spurs are in dire need of a proven goal-scorer and so Ings will fit the bill perfectly at North London.
However, the Saints cannot afford to lose him at this stage of the campaign after his goals helped them steer clear of the relegation zone. However, Southampton are not out of danger just yet and so letting Ings go this month could be a catastrophic move that might even put them back in relegation trouble this season.
