According to the reports from Portuguese media outlet O Jogo, Rangers are looking to raid Sporting CP for their midfielder Miguel Luis. The Bears are interested in signing him on loan until the end of the campaign. Sporting’s head coach is reportedly not opposed to a loan move for the 20-year-old midfielder.
Luis is a Portugal under u-21 international and has come up from Sporting club’s academy. The midfield ace is yet to establish himself in the first team for his club, and he has featured in just seven games across all competitions this season.
Do Rangers need midfielders?
Gerrard after their poor display against Hearts said in jest (Daily Star) that he would need to bring in 8 new players in the remainder of the transfer window. That was more a dig towards his team’s performance. However, Ryan Jack is set to be out for a few weeks with an injury and Rangers might feel that they could be short in midfield. Earlier in the window, the Gers allowed Andy King to leave who was on loan from Leicester City.
However, we still feel that Rangers have enough cover in the middle to cope up with the challenges with Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo present in the squad.
With Jack suffering an injury, Rangers might want to keep hold of Greg Docherty as well who is attracting interest from Sunderland. Greg Stewart can also play in an advanced midfield role with two defensive-minded midfielders protecting him.
What can Luis bring to the table?
Luis is an attack-minded midfielder who can play in a box to box role or as an attacking midfielder. The Portuguese ace is known for his impressive close-quarter control, and he can carry the ball forward smartly. He uses his agility well to go past players. The Sporting CP ace also has an excellent long-range shot on him.
However, the midfielder might want to improve on his physical strength if he wants to be successful in the Scottish Premiership. We believe that he would be a decent pick in midfield, but Luis could end up being surplus to requirements just like Andy King. The 20-year-old will need some time to settle in as he isn’t much experienced and his signing could go either way if the midfielder isn’t able to adapt at Ibrox. Signing a central midfielder isn’t a necessity for the club, and Luis is unlikely to make an impact straightaway in the Rangers midfield.
