Rangers had been linked (Football.London) with a move for Chelsea’s youngster Conor Gallagher in the first week of January. The midfielder who spent the first half of the season with Charlton Atheltic on loan had surprisingly been recalled back by the Blues. Clubs like Burnley, Norwich, West Bromwich Albion, Millwall and Swansea are also said to be keen on signing him on loan along with Rangers.
Gallagher’s recall back is a surprise as he has emerged as the mainstay in midfield for the Addicks. The 19-year-old featured prominently in the defensive midfield role as he made 26 appearances in the Championship. The English ace contributed with six goals and three assists before being recalled back.
Bowyer gives his verdict on Gallagher
Even Lee Bowyer was taken by surprise that Chelsea decided to call him back. The Charlton boss said, ‘’I’m disappointed. I didn’t see this coming if I’m honest, which makes it harder to take. At the end of the day, though, we have to move on.”
“He’s been a credit and a pleasure to work with. He’s come in and put his body on the line every single day. He’s scored us goals and helped us win games. For someone so young, he’s a great talent to work with.”
Maybe the Blues would want him to go on loan to a Premier League club next, or Frank Lampard believes that Gallagher might be able to contribute in the Chelsea first team in some way or the other. Nevertheless, with the midfielder being recalled back, it will give Rangers a chance to lure him in this month.
What can Gallagher bring at Ibrox?
The Chelsea ace is a versatile player as he can play in different roles in midfield. However, he is known as a defensive midfielder. Gallagher is known for his energy and tenacity, and he can time his challenges well. The midfielder showcases good on the ball qualities, and he can keep the ball even under immense pressure. To go with all that, he has goals to his game as he can make late runs in the box along with the ability to score from long range.
While being at Charlton, Gallagher earned his first England u-21 cap, and the 19-year-old has been in terrific form this season. Rangers don’t really need midfielders as they have a decent amount of options. However, Gallagher would be a decent signing. But it’s hard to see Lampard sanctioning a move for him after he was recalled back from Charlton even though he did so well for them.
