According to a recent report by The Daily Mail, Newcastle United scouts were present to watch Olympique Lyonnais striker Moussa Dembele in action against Bordeaux last weekend. The same source has also revealed that the Magpies will face stiff competition from Manchester United, Manchester City and West Ham United in pursuit of the Ligue 1 sensation.
Dembele’s Incredible Form In French Football
The French marksman managed to put in a goal-scoring display versus Bordeaux that helped his side claim a 2-1 victory on Saturday. The former Celtic ace has enjoyed another productive season in France after putting in several goal-scoring performances in the French top-flight so far.
Dembele has registered 13 goals and three assists in 27 appearances for Lyon this term across all competitions. He has averaged 2.1 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
The 23-year-old has represented France at various youth levels but is yet to earn a senior call-up for his nation. Maybe, a switch to the Premier League could give him a bigger platform to showcase his talents at the highest level which might be enough to catch the attention of Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps in the future.
What Will The French Centre-Forward Bring To St. James’ Park?
Dembele is a quick and energetic striker who doesn’t mind putting the extra miles for the benefit of his team. He excels at holding the ball up to get others involved in the final third. The French sensation can also make some well-timed runs behind the opposition backline that makes him such a potent threat going forward.
Furthermore, Dembele is a proven goal-scorer who has previously been productive for Celtic and is now enjoying a brilliant spell with Lyon. He has all the makings of a top goal-getter and so Newcastle could be an ideal destination for him in the long run.
It is no secret that Steve Bruce needs to add more quality to his injury-hit Magpies squad if he wants his side to push for a top-half finish in the Premier League this season. Hence, recruiting a prolific goal-scorer like Dembele could bring some success to the Tyneside giants in the coming years.
