Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford picked up a knock in the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup on Wednesday night. He came on as a substitute but lasted only 16 minutes on the pitch. The England international collided with Matt Doherty and appeared to be in a lot of pain.
He provided an emotional update after the match and tweeted, ‘Never want to feel like I’ve let my teammates, the club and most importantly the fans down so did my very best to carry on tonight and was gutted to come off. Top work from the lads to get into the next round.’
The Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also shared his concerns with the media when he said (via The Metro), ‘Yeah that backfired but you’ve got to go for them once in a while.
‘But it seems like he’s got a knock there and he couldn’t run.
‘Let’s test him over the next couple of days. Hopefully he’ll be okay for Sunday, I don’t know.
‘He’s struggled a little bit with a couple of knocks with his back lately and he got another one which didn’t help.’
Man United already have a lot of key players like Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Axel Tuanzebe out injured so they cannot afford to lose any more players ahead of the daunting trip to Anfield to face off against the Premier League leaders Liverpool later this weekend.
However, given the circumstances, it seems like Rashford will be a major doubt for the game on Sunday and could end up missing out if he fails to recover in time.
What Makes Rashford Such A Vital Member Of Solskjaer’s First-Team?
The 22-year-old has scored 19 goals and provided five assists in 30 matches for the Mancunian giants this term across all competitions. His incredible goal-scoring displays have helped the Red Devils compete on all fronts this season.
The 38-time England international is one of the quickest players in the English top-flight and has been a lethal finisher in the final third. He has been Solskjaer’s most potent weapon this season and is currently an irreplaceable member of the Man United first-team.
Can The Red Devils Cope With Rashford’s Absence?
None of the other options at the Norwegian manager’s disposal has been able to be consistent in terms of their productivity this season. Therefore, the Red Devils will find it difficult to cope with Rashford’s absence if he does end up being unavailable for selection versus the Reds this weekend. We are guessing Mason Greenwood would begin if Rashford fails to make it, but the youngster does not yet possess the dynamism needed to compete in such a heated game.
