According to the reports from Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are considering a move for Sheffield United’s striker Billy Sharp. The Whites are on the lookout for a new striker in this window as they lost the services of Eddie Nketiah who was recalled by Arsenal.
Sharp played for the Whites in the 2014-15 campaign where he scored five goals for them. The striker then returned to his youth club Sheffield United and helped them in moving from League One to the Premier League. The striker bagged 24 goals and four assists last season to help the Blades win promotion to the Premier League.
However, the experienced forward has fallen down the pecking order under Chris Wilder now. The Blades are flying high in the Premier League so far, and Wilder has predominantly used the likes of Oliver McBurnie, David McGoldrick and Lys Mousset upfront. Sharp has started just one game in the Premier League this season.
Chris Wilder explains Sharp’s situation
Wilder recently revealed that he would let the decision of leaving in Sharp’s hands. The Sheffield boss said, ”I’ve always been very consistent with the message that, until Billy comes to me and says he has to play regular first-team football, then he’ll be here. And he hasn’t. We’ve had calls of people and enquiries. I’m open and honest. I’ve told Billy this club has come in for him and that club comes in for him. But he’s always said no, and that he wants to stay here until at least the end of the season.”
As things stand, Sharp seems to be content at the Bramall Lane even though he has featured sporadically this season. The striker has his contract at the club until 2021. The report doesn’t mention whether the Whites are looking to sign him permanently or on loan. We believe that a loan move would be more plausible for Leeds United.
Will Sharp be a good addition?
Sharp will be a decent short term solution for the Whites, and he is proven player at the Championship level. The striker is known for his intelligent movement, and he seems to have a natural instinct in front of goal. Sharp’s awareness and finishing skills are his standout assets.
The striker can also hold up play well when necessary. However, he isn’t blessed with too much pace and is on a decline. Nevertheless, Sharp is a hard worker off the ball and given that Leeds United create so many chances, the former Leeds man should be successful at Elland Road.
