In a recent interview with Omroep Gelderland (translated by The Liverpool Echo), Vitesse left-back Max Clark shared his thoughts on the recent speculation linking him with a switch to Liverpool. He said, “In football everyone is confronted with rumours, you have to deal with that.
“It’s nice to be linked to them. I think everyone would be happy with these teams. It’s great, but it’s rumours.”
However, the English defender had gone on to reveal that he has no intentions of making a move back to England when he added (via The Liverpool Echo), “I don’t want to play there either, because I want to go into Europe with Vitesse. So I don’t do anything with it.
“It’s fun for my family and friends, but I’ll let them enjoy it. But I leave it behind, because I want to stay here.”
The Liverpool Echo has also claimed that the Eredivisie rising star is presently not in the Reds’ radar even though he has just 18 months remaining on his current contract with Vitesse.
Do The Reds Need A New Left-Back?
Jurgen Klopp has every reason to be happy with the overall depth of his squad this season. However, the only area of the current Liverpool team that lacks cover is probably the left-back position. The European champions have got James Milner filling in as a makeshift left-back when Andrew Robertson has been unavailable. At the same time, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold can also do a job in that position.
Fortunately, Robertson has been a terrific athlete for the Reds over the past few years as he has hardly missed any games due to injury. So Klopp has not felt the need to bring in a natural left-back thus far. However, with the Merseyside giants now on the brink of ending their long wait for a league title, maybe the German head coach should revisit the idea of signing a new full-back at the end of this campaign.
The Premier League leaders have often relied heavily on the fitness of their first-team players rather than utilise the depth of the whole squad like how some of the other dynasties have done in recent years.
What Makes Clark Such A Promising Talent?
Clark has impressed a lot of his critics following his move to Vitesse from Hull City in the summer of 2018. He is enjoying a productive season with the Eredivisie outfit after being involved in four goals in 19 matches for them across all competitions. He has averaged 3.9 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 2.6 clearances and 1.6 key passes per game in the Dutch top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should The Merseyside Giants Move In For The Eredivisie Sensation Next Summer?
Even though his record offensively has not been noteworthy when compared to the Liverpool full-backs, yet his defensive numbers have been far better as he has often been tested at the back. Clark has shown tremendous maturity to help his side climb to the sixth place of the Eredivisie table.
If the English full-back can continue with his good form throughout this calendar year, then Klopp should consider making a move for his services next summer. Clark seems determined to prove his worth at the highest level and so Liverpool could turn out to be a dream destination for him in the coming years.
