According to a recent report by The Times, Tottenham Hotspur CEO Daniel Levy has reached out to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to discuss the possibility of signing Real Madrid wing wizard Gareth Bale on deadline day. The same source has reported that Spurs have made a breakthrough in their quest to bring their former star back to North London before the transfer window slams shut later tonight.
However, Los Blancos has ruled out the possibility of Bale’s departure from the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in this window. In a recent interview (via Sky Sports), Zinedine Zidane said, “Gareth is here with us and I am counting on him. I am not contemplating this possibility.”
The Welsh speedster has endured a frustrating campaign at the Spanish capital after being used sporadically in Zidane’s first-team so far. He has made 15 appearances for the Galacticos this term, netting three goals while providing two assists in all competitions.
Bale has averaged 2.2 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in the La Liga this season (stats via whoscored). He also has a wealth of experience at the international level, having represented the Welsh national side in 79 matches while scoring 32 goals for his nation in the process.
What Does The Wales International Bring To The Table?
Despite turning 30 last year, Bale is still one of the quickest players in European football and can use his pace to beat his marker in the final third. He excels at completing some dangerous dribbles with the ball and is still quite direct in the way he approaches the game. He packs a lot of power with his shots from long range and is also an accomplished finisher in front of the opposition goal.
Recruiting Bale In January: Wise Move For Tottenham?
An experienced winger of Bale’s quality would have undoubtedly added a lot of goals and assists to Jose Mourinho’s squad. However, it seems like Real Madrid’s reluctance to sanction the Welshman’s departure will be a huge stumbling block for Spurs to overcome before the transfer deadline later tonight.
At the same time, Spurs deserve praise for identifying Bale as a potential option this winter, and it could prove to be a shrewd move by Mourinho if he can find a way to bring the Madrid star back to England in the future.
