According to a recent report by The Daily Express, Premier League high-flyers Chelsea are said to be quite keen on a January move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as Frank Lampard looks to strengthen his side going into what promises to be an extremely difficult remainder of the season. The Blues are said to have earmarked the talismanic forward as their prime attacking target and have already begun their pursuit of the Frenchman.
As was claimed by Transfer Window Podcast pundit Ian McGarry, the report suggests that Chelsea have all but sealed a verbal agreement with the striker’s representatives about a January transfer. Despite the reluctance from Lyon to let their man leave, the Premier League side said to be confident about getting a deal through the door for the Frenchman’s services.
Why Are Chelsea Targeting Moussa Dembele In January?
Frank Lampard has found an ideal Premier League striker in the form of Tammy Abraham this season. Still, the lack of competition for places in that position is surely hurting the motivation levels within the club.
While the gaffer does have both Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud as attacking options as well, neither of them have been able to provide any consistency in the final third.
While the Belgian has been mostly limited to late substitute appearances, Giroud has effectively been dropped from the team. Although he recently started a game, his time at the Bridge is undoubtedly drawing to a close. Despite all the excellent work that Tammy Abraham has done so far this season, the fact that Chelsea still have Champions League football to worry about as well will surely be concerning the manager.
Also, the Blues haven’t been the prolific in front of goal this season. They’ve managed to find the net just 36 times this season – the lowest of all the teams in the top four. The situation is so bad the highest scorers in Manchester City have got a whopping 20 goals more than the Blues. Abraham’s twelve strikes have undoubtedly come in handy, but adding another proven goalscorer would only help Lampard’s cause.
Why Chelsea Must Sign Dembele In January?
The Blues are going into the new year in a pretty fragile position in the league, and unless they’re able to maintain a decent level of form, the drop off could be rapid. Lampard even has a two-legged Champions League encounter with German giants Bayern Munich to worry about in a month’s time.
All things considered, it makes complete sense for the Blues to sign a striker in the winter, and at least for the time being, they need to look no further than Moussa Dembele.
