Celtic are having a busy window in terms of incomings following their slip up against Rangers prior to the winter break. Their ‘nine-in-a-row’ mission is under threat and Neil Lennon, therefore, is aiming to bolster the squad furthermore to maintain their supremacy in Scottish football.
The Hoops have strengthened the attacking line by roping in Patryk Klimala amid concerns over Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo’s disappointing run of form. But they are not done yet in the window and according to Record Sport, have joined the chase for the in-demand Peterborough United sensation Ivan Toney to add more firepower upfront.
The 23-year-old Englishman has been in blistering form having fired in 19 times already this campaign across all competitions. He has brought the Posh back in the promotion battle defeating Wycombe and Rotherham United respectively over the past seven days. Toney has scored thrice in these two games including a brace against Wycombe in front of a Celtic scout (as revealed by the Bristol Live) who was in attendance.
Should Lennon Step Up The Chase?
Celtic have been scouting the former Newcastle United ‘number 9’ for a while, but they are not the only side linked with a move for the League One hotshot. Bristol City and Brentford are keen admirers of his scoring traits and the Hoops, while having Odsonne Edouard leading the line and delivering week in week out, must step up their interest in Toney to stay relevant in this transfer battle.
With Bayo and Griffiths’ future seemingly uncertain at Parkhead considering their current status, a move for the attacker should be pursued as a statement of intent from the management.
Constraints For Celtic
The Bhoys are blessed to have Edouard spearheading the attack but, at the same time, they must be worried over a potential summer exit amid interest from an array of European heavyweights. Toney, on the other hand, is valued in the region of £9m – an amount the club paid for the Frenchman during Brendan Rodgers’ regime
Celtic are not blessed to spend millions in the transfer market, and it is to be seen now whether they splash the cash on the centre-forward or focus on the other priorities before the window is slammed shut.
