According to a recent report by Foot Mercato, Barcelona have tabled an €80m offer to acquire the services of Wissam Ben Yedder from AS Monaco as they look to bring him in as a temporary replacement for Luis Suarez, who is currently out of action for four months due to injury.
It is believed that the Spanish champions have been left impressed by the Ligue 1 striker’s impressive form and are now willing to sanction a deal for him so that he can solve some of Quique Setien’s goal-scoring worries at the Nou Camp (via Foot Mercato).
Does Barca Need A Striker Of Ben Yedder’s Track Record?
It is no secret that the current Barca team are overly reliant on the contributions of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann going forward. It was once again on evidence last Saturday when the Catalans were defeated by a 2-0 scoreline away at Valencia in the La Liga. Hence, the need to recruit a new centre-forward has only increased, and there are only a few better than Ben Yedder in French football.
The Sarcelles-born attacker has put in some memorable displays for Robert Moreno’s side this term, scoring 15 goals and providing nine assists in 23 matches across all competitions. The former Toulouse forward has averaged 2.6 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored). He has also earned eight senior caps for the French national team and has registered two goals for his country thus far.
What Will The Ex-Sevilla Forward Add To Setien’s Side?
Ben Yedder is one of the quickest players in the French top-flight, and he puts his pace to good use when attempting to run behind the opposition backline. He excels at beating his marker in a 1v1 footrace and is a lethal finisher in front of goal. The French marksman tends to find space inside the opposition penalty area and can get shots in at goal that pack a lot of power. He is a composed figure up top and can find the back of the net using his head as well.
Ben Yedder is a complete centre-forward, so it seems like Barca will benefit a lot from his acquisition, especially with Luis Suarez out of action for the foreseeable future. He will not add a lot of goals and assists to Setien’s frontline but will also increase the overall depth of his squad at the Nou Camp.
Therefore, it makes a lot of sense for the Catalan outfit to splash the cash on him before the end of this winter transfer window.
