According to Marca, Atletico Madrid have identified Alexandre Lacazette as their ideal alternative should they miss out on Edinson Cavani. The Spanish outfit is even willing to negotiate a swap deal that would involve Thomas Lemar going to Arsenal, in exchange of Lacazette heading the other direction. And in this article, we will discuss the pros and cons for Arsenal in this potential swap deal.
Pros of Lemar’s arrival
The addition of Lemar could serve as a considerable boost in Arsenal’s attacking department. The Gunners did bring in the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Dani Ceballos in the summer while Reiss Nelson also returned from his loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim.
Yet, they haven’t quite been able to fill in the shoes of Alexis Sanchez. Lemar, in that regard, could provide Mikel Arteta more firepower in the offensive department. Also, it would allow the Spaniard with more tactical flexibility as the ex-Monaco star can feature anywhere across the final third.
But most importantly, the permanent signing of Lemar could enable Arsenal to let go of Mesut Ozil finally. The German’s stupendously high wages has always been a problem at the Emirates and offloading him could help the Gunners add a bit more balance to their financial structure – ultimately allowing them to sign more players.
Cons of Lacazette’s departure
On the flip side, Lacazette’s departure could create a massive void in the offensive department for Arsenal. The north London giants have relied a lot on the duo of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lacazette over the past couple of years.
The departure of the Frenchman, in that regard, could force them to over-rely on the services of Aubameyang. And speaking of this, it is probably fair to point out that the Gabonese international has been linked with a move away from Emirates due to his incredible performances.
Therefore, Arsenal may potentially have to search for a new striker within the next couple of years if they do let go of Lacazette in this January transfer window. And this is quite a difficult task, especially given the immense competition in the transfer market.
Tottenham, for example, are yet to find a reliable alternative for Harry Kane. Moreover, it is also fair to consider the fact that Lemar hasn’t really been able to make a mark since joining Atletico. Hence, whether or not he will be able to replicate his form in the Premier League remains a doubt, meaning this swap deal is no less than a massive gamble for the Gunners.
