According to FC Inter News, Arsenal are among the clubs interested in the services of Ionut Radu. The Inter Milan goalkeeper, who is currently on loan at Genoa, has fallen out of favour due to lack of game-time this season. As a result, a return to Milan could be on the cards, which, in turn, has alerted the likes of Arsenal and West Ham. However, Inter are appearing reluctant on letting go of their prized ‘keeper on a permanent basis.
Radu’s spell in the Serie A
An Inter Milan academy graduate, Radu has been a part of the first-team since 2016. But, he spent loan spells at Avelino and Genoa in 2017 and 2018. The goalkeeper enjoyed his breakout season in Serie A during the 2018/19 campaign, making 33 league appearances. His performances in between the sticks were vital as Genoa somehow managed to save themselves from the wrath of relegation.
As a result, Radu was sent back to Genoa on loan in the summer. He has remained the first-choice ‘keeper for La Superba, notably featuring in 17 matches in the league so far. But, following the return of Mattia Perin, who was out injured due to a shoulder problem, Radu is running the risk of being left out of the first-team during the remainder of the campaign.
In this situation, a move away from Stadio Luigi Ferraris could make sense. He has a considerable chance of becoming Inter’s first-choice goalkeeper within in the coming years, with all of the Nerazzurri’s current goalkeepers aged above 34.
Do Arsenal need a new goalkeeper?
Arsenal could certainly welcome the arrival of a quality second-choice goalkeeper. Emiliano Martinez has done a decent job, but the Gunners seriously lack any depth, in case the Argentine gets injured.
As for Bernd Leno, he has performed really well for the most part, following a mixed start to his Arsenal career. Although the German was involved in a muck up that resulted in Arsenal conceding two late goals against Chelsea earlier this season, he has still remained one of the club’s most consistent performers this term.
Besides, it may not be the perfect time for Arsenal to invest in a goalkeeper. The north London giants genuinely lack quality in the backline, and therefore, the addition of a new centre-back could be imperative in this January transfer window. Radu, in that regard, is not a viable transfer.
