According to Corriere Dello Sport, as cited by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur were in contact with Edin Dzeko’s agent as well as the representatives of AS Roma regarding a potential move for the Bosnian international. However, Roma have pulled the plug on Dzeko’s transfer away from Rome as they believe he is an “irreplaceable player” for the Italian outfit.
Dzeko’s importance at Roma
Dzeko joined Roma back in 2015, in a season-long loan deal from Manchester City before it was made permanent for €11 million the following summer. He really flourished after moving to Serie A, notably scoring a total of 37 goals in his first two seasons in the Italian top flight.
As a result, Dzeko has now become a key component in the Roma attack. Although it was expected that his game-time would decrease following the arrival of Nikola Kalinic, the Croatian’s injury problems have served as a boost for the former Man City forward, who has been involved in 15 league matches so far.
Dzeko’s presence in the Roma team has greatly helped Paulo Fonseca battle with the injury crisis this campaign while the Bosnian himself has netted six goals. The forward’s current contract in Roma runs until 2022.
Is Dzeko a viable target for Tottenham?
Dzeko is indeed a luxury option for Tottenham Hotspur in their bid to sign an alternative for Harry Kane. The Lilywhites have lacked the presence of a viable number two for Kane for a long time, which is what forced previous head coach Mauricio Pochettino to often rely on Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min.
Dzeko, in that regard, would have been an ideal target. The Bosnian has previously proved himself in the Premier League, having netted 50 goals in just 130 matches during his time at Manchester City. His contributions, were in fact, quite critical behind the Sky Blues’ Premier League triumphs in 2012 and 2014.
Let us not forget, Dzeko has also played in the Bundesliga, where he had scored 66 goals in 111 matches. Hence, the Bosnian is a proven goalscorer at the highest level of football. And he could certainly use that experience to add a new dimension and strength to the Spurs attack that has lacked the fuel in this new campaign.
Therefore, it is fair to assume that missing out on Dzeko could serve as a massive blow for Mourinho. But, there are fortunately a lot of other options available in the market, and it would be interesting to see who does the Portuguese mastermind target next.
