According to former Egypt international and pundit Haytham Farouk, as cited by the Scottish Sun, Rangers are in negotiations with Mostafa Mohamed over a possible move. Mohamed is a striker by trade, and he is one of the highest-rated young players in Africa right now. The striker finished as the top scorer in the Under 23s African Cup of Nations last month. The 22-year-old currently plies his trade for Cairo giants Zamalek. Mohamed is also a two time Egypt international.
Former Egypt international gives a transfer update regarding Rangers
Farouk indicated that the Bears had sent delegates to speak with Mohamed. The former Feyenoord player recently said, “I know for a fact Mohamed has options in European football most notably from Glasgow Rangers. Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has already sent a delegate from his club to speak with him. They were attracted to him because of his performances in the Under 23s Cup of Nations.”
“I think it would be a great move for him to go to a club like Rangers. It’s important when he does move to European football; he takes the right steps with the right club.”
Mohamed had managed 13 goals and six assists in all competitions last season for his club. This season, the striker has two goals and an assist to his name in 9 appearances.
Do Rangers need a striker?
Rangers have two fit and firing striker in Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos. Defoe’s contract is set to expire in the summer, but reports indicate that he could be handed a new deal. As for Morelos, he continues to attract significant attention from some Premier League clubs.
This season, Rangers might not need a striker, but for next season, they might need one. The club didn’t go out and replace Kyle Lafferty this summer. Hence an injury to either Defoe or Morelos could add pressure on either one of them. So maybe even in January, the Gers might need a striker.
What is Mohamed known for?
Mohamed is yet to play club football outside of Egypt, so it would be some gamble if Rangers get him. The Bears shouldn’t expect miracles from his straightaway if they can get his signature. The Egyptian striker was also named in AFCON u-23’s team of the season. The 22-year-old is a targetman kind of a striker, and he is strong and physical in his duels. However, he also has the technical and dribbling skills to beat his man in one on situations.
It remains to be seen whether Rangers will move in for him or not. Mohamed seems to have potential and Rangers will hope that he doesn’t turn out to be like Umar Sadiq.
