Rangers Are Set To Tie Down This Veteran Trio On A New Deal: A No Brainer For Gerrard?

According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Rangers will soon announce new deals for their veteran trio of Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe. All three have been in talks with the club for quite some time, and the official announcement would be made in the coming days.

The impact of the veteran trio so far

Defoe is currently on loan from Bournemouth, and his contract with the Cherries will expire in the summer. Hence, he would be available on a free transfer. The veteran English striker has been a top backup option to Morelos, and he is currently the joint top scorer in the Premiership.

Allan McGregor is still going strong at the age of 37, and he has been instrumental in goal for the Gers. He might not get too much to do in most of the games, but he has always been there when called into action. McGregor was signed last year on a two-year deal, and his contract would expire in the summer of 2020.

It is believed that McGregor has an appearance-based clause which will trigger an extension soon. The way he is going, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him carry on for two or three more seasons.

And then there is Steven Davis. The experienced Northern Irish midfielder has dominantly played in a slightly deeper role as a deep-lying playmaker. Davis spreads passes and turns over possession quickly from midfield. He also uses his experience and intelligence to sniff out dangers before they can develop. Davis is always confident and willing to get on the ball, and he too seems to be going strong at the moment.

Hence, it is no surprise that the club is looking to hand him an extension as well. The midfielder had initially joined on a six-month loan in January, and he was given a year-long contract in the summer. But he too has undoubtedly earned an extension after an impressive season so far.

A no brainer for Gerrard

All the three deals shouldn’t be too surprising as Gerrard had indicated earlier that they would be given a new deal. Players like McGregor, Defoe and Davis also make the job of the manager easier off the pitch, given the vast experience the three have at the top level. The youngsters can learn a lot from them, and the trio has looked supremely fit in what is supposed to be the fag end of their careers. Rangers will hope that their experience could see them through in this tight title race with Celtic.
