According to La Derniere Heure, as cited by The Guardian, Jose Mourinho is keen on reuniting with Marouane Fellaini at Tottenham Hotspur. The Shandong Luneng midfielder has been identified as the number one January target for the Portuguese mastermind, especially because he thinks that there is no such player of his calibre in the current Spurs side.

Fellaini’s story so far

Fellaini, since his move to Manchester United in the summer of 2013, has had an eventful career. He was more or less a cult hero at Old Trafford but also a maligned figure. He spent almost six years at United before leaving for Shangdong Luneng in February, for a fee of €7.2 million.

During his ongoing spell in China, Fellaini has become one of the best midfielders in the Chinese Super League. He was notably involved in 11 goals in this recently concluded 2019 season at SD Luneng, helping the club finish fifth in the league table. His contributions in midfield alongside Junmin Hao were critical as Luneng emerged as one of the most rigid teams in the competition.

Fellaini also impressed in AFC Champions League, scoring four goals in eight matches. He did, however, fail to prevent SD Luneng from losing to Guangzhou Evergrande in the knockout rounds.

Is Fellaini a viable target for Spurs?

As mentioned earlier, Fellaini has managed to impress the onlookers with his performances in the Chinese Super League. And although he is slowly nearing the final stage of his career, he can truly help Tottenham emerge as a more resolute side as the Lilywhites look to recover from a stuttering start to the campaign.

For one, Fellaini’s versatility could offer Mourinho much more tactical options in midfield. The Belgian, though a central midfielder by trade, can feature as a holding midfielder and even as a makeshift number nine if needed. His aerial prowess makes him a genuine threat from set-pieces.

But most importantly, it is Fellaini’s connection with Mourinho that could really spark life to his potential return to the Premier League. Indeed, it was under Mourinho where the ex-Everton star had enjoyed the most successful spell of his Man United career.

The Portuguese mastermind knows how to utilise his versatility, aggression and physical qualities best. Hence, Fellaini could potentially emerge as a really useful component to the Tottenham side, thereby making him an ideal target for the Premier League giants.
