Manchester United Said To Have Made Contact With This Striker: Should The Red Devils Get This Deal Done?

According to a recent report by TuttoMercatoWeb, Premier League giants Manchester United are said to have made contact with Napoli’s Belgian international forward Dries Mertens, to discuss the possibility of a switch to Old Trafford. The winger is contracted to Napoli till the end of the current season but will be free to walk away at the end of his term.

With Napoli chairman Aurelio Di Laurentiis unwilling to give Mertens a new contract worth €6m a year, the forward could be forced to move away. Although Inter Milan had been initially tipped to be the front-runners in the chase for the Belgian’s signature, the report now suggests that Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United are both keen on his services as well.

What Is Manchester United’s Current Attacking Situation?

Although Manchester United have been in a decent run of form over a few weeks now, their season has been an extremely turbulent one. The reliance on Marcus Rashford for goals has led Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to use young Mason Greenwood in the first team at times this term. Even though the youngster had stepped up to the plate, adding more experience to this United side certainly won’t hurt.

Anthony Martial had been tipped to be the first-choice forward for United this time around, but he seems to be consistently misfiring for no apparent reason. He’s only played ten times in the league to start with and has found the net on just four occasions. On the other hand, Marcus Rashford has featured in all 16 fixtures and picked up an impressive return of ten goals and four assists as well.

Why Manchester United Should Go For Dries Mertens

The Belgian is a proven international attacker, who’s been plying his trade at the highest level for a long time now. He’s played in just over 300 fixtures for Napoli over the years and has a fantastic record of 118 goals and 70 assists. With 90 international caps to his name as well, there’s no need to even question whether he is the kind of player suitable for a club like Manchester United.

The winger, despite being 32, still has a lot of pace and energy that he can provide in an attacking sense. He is a versatile player as well, often seen playing at centre-forward for Napoli over the last many years. He is an excellent finisher once he gets into the box, and provides an added degree of finesse and creativity in the final third as well – just the kind of player this United team might be calling out for at this point in time.
