In a recent interview after Liverpool’s 5-2 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby (via The Daily Mirror), Xherdan Shaqiri revealed that he is ‘feeling good’ following a long spell on the treatment table due to a severe calf injury. The Switzerland international said (via The Daily Mirror), “I’ve been injured [but] thank God I don’t have knee problems or something. I had some muscle problems so I just needed a few weeks to recover well.
“The calf is very dangerous to get another injury and I had this so obviously it was not nice but I stayed positive and tried to come back.
“I worked very hard in the gym and with the fitness coaches to come back and be ready when the coach needs me. I’m feeling good.”
Shaqiri’s Injury-Ridden Season At Anfield
The fact that Shaqiri managed to score a goal against the Toffees and is enjoying life at Merseyside will be a welcome bit of news for anyone associated with Liverpool. It is no secret that the 28-year-old has had his fair share of injuries since his big move to Anfield from Stoke City at the start of last season.
The Swiss wing wizard has missed a major chunk of this campaign so far with a calf problem. He has only made five appearances for the Reds across all competitions with his strike versus the Toffees his only goal of this campaign. Now that Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to compete across five different competitions in the coming weeks, Shaqiri’s availability will help them cope with the fixture congestion.
What Does The Swiss Maestro Bring To The Field?
Shaqiri is a deceptively quick winger who can make some penetrative runs with the ball. He is also a lethal finisher from in and around the opposition penalty box. The Swiss playmaker excels at exchanging quick passes with his teammates and is also not shy of playing a killer ball in the final third.
Shaqiri ‘Feeling Good’ After Recent Injury Set-Back: Big Boost For Klopp?
Liverpool have received a massive boost now that Shaqiri is enjoying his football and close to being at his best. The former FC Basel wide player could be a game-changer for the Reds in their title run-in as long as he can stay injury-free for the remainder of this campaign.
With the Merseyside club set to feature in nine more fixtures this month, there is no doubt that Shaqiri will get a lot more first-team minutes that could help him rediscover his form at Anfield.
