According to a recent report by Haber 3, Leicester City sent out scouts to catch Fenerbahce centre-forward Vedat Muriqi in action against Genclerbirligi on Friday. The Kosovo international ended up scoring a brace in that game. It is understood that the Turkish Super Lig giants are valuing their prized asset at around £18m (via Aksam), a fee which would be a stumbling block for the Foxes.
Muriqi’s Impressive Spell In Turkish Football
The 25-year-old has been in fine form in the Turkish top-flight after putting in a string of match-winning performances for Fener so far. Since sealing a move from Caykur Rizespor last summer, he has gone on to make 14 appearances for the Turkish outfit this term, netting ten goals while providing three assists on all fronts.
Muriqi is averaging 3.6 shots, 1.8 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the top tier of Turkey (stats via whoscored). He has also represented the Kosovo national side in 23 international matches while scoring eight goals for his country in the process.
The Foxes could benefit from acquiring a reliable back-up for Jamie Vardy as they are currently a bit short of quality options in the striking department. Leicester are presently the dark horses for the Premier League title, so they need to buy well in the future if they are to keep their title dreams alive in the coming months.
What Will The Kosovo International Bring To The King Power Stadium?
Standing at 6ft 4inches, Muriqi is a dominant presence in the attacking third and can win a lot of aerial duels by overpowering the opposition. He can hold the ball well and get others involved in the final third, but his link-up play leaves a lot to be desired. The Kosovo marksman has gradually transformed himself into a consistent goal-scorer in Turkey. However, the jury is still out on whether he would be able to cope with the physical nature of English football.
Muriqi has all the makings of a top striker as long as he can stay free from injuries. He could prove to be an ideal back-up for Jamie Vardy at the King Power Stadium. The 25-year-old will provide Brendan Rodgers with a ‘Plan B’ if things are not going to plan on the pitch.
He is a menacing presence in the air which makes him an excellent impact substitute. Rodgers could look to utilise him off the bench much like how he has relied on Kelechi Iheanacho’s late contributions as a substitute in recent weeks.
