Katic Gets 8.5, Morelos With 7 | Rangers Players Rated And Slated In Their Win Against Motherwell

The disappointment of League Cup final healed to some extent on Thursday night when Rangers made it through to the knockouts of the UEFA Europa League. Steven Gerrard, along with two of his veterans Allan McGregor and Steven Davis extended their stay at the Ibrox, signing new deals and the game against Motherwell this afternoon offered them an opportunity to keep the pressure on the league leaders, Celtic in the Premiership title battle.

The Gers had firm control over the game before Alfredo Morelos received his marching orders (for a second yellow) for his gestures towards the Motherwell fans while celebrating his goal. Gerrard, however, led his men to maintain the shape for the remainder of the match and clinched a 2-0 victory, shaking off those late scares.

Below are how the Rangers players rated in their commanding win against the Steelmen.

Allan McGregor: 8

Made a terrific save to deny Chris Long from scoring an equaliser. The home side had their moments but failed to threaten the custodian enough.

James Tavernier: 7.5

The skipper not only made timely overlapping runs but also exhibited composure while protecting the lead, particularly after going down to ten men. He is working on his defensive attributes and has certainly shown some signs of improvement over the past few weeks.

Connor Goldson: 7.5

Was a towering presence in the heart of the Gers’ backline. Was in the right place at the right time and did well to contain the likes of Long and Devante Cole, who tried to cause menace with their pace and physicality.

Nikola Katic: 8.5

Earned back to back starts in the absence of Filip Helander and marked his presence with a goal when he nodded home from Barisic’s corner midway through the first half. Defended steadily and ensured a clean sheet despite being a man down for the final 20 minutes of the game.

Borna Barisic: 8

The Croatian enjoyed his time down the left-hand flank. Set it up for Katic from the corner and almost found one in the closing seconds from a free-kick which, however, cannoned off the woodwork following Mark Gillespie’s fingertip save.

Ryan Jack: 7

Was combative in the centre of the pitch and never allowed the hosts to dominate possession. Kept on making the ground big by distributing the ball down the flanks and stretched the Motherwell backline enough to create space for Morelos in and around the box.

Joe Aribo: 8

Had an excellent outing as he covered a lot of grass, showed excellent defensive awareness, also played his part in Morelos’ goal by making a cross from the right flank. Was taken off late in the match to be replaced by Jermain Defoe.

Glen Kamara: 7.5

Partnered Jack in the middle of the park. Was calm and composed over the ball and often found Kent in acres of space down the left-hand flank. His vision and passing range are helping Rangers to orchestrate the show from a central role.

Scott Arfield: 6.5

Worked hard and often switched his position with Aribo to disorganise the hosts’ defensive set-up. Linked up well with his teammates and created a few chances in the attacking third. Was taken off in the closing seconds to be replaced by Greg Stewart.

Ryan Kent: 7.5

Terrorized the Motherwell backline with his blistering pace, dribbling and powerful runs. Showed great composure in the tight spaces and often cut inside from the left-hand channel to threaten the opponents. Made way for Matt Polster late in the game.

Alfredo Morelos: 7

Rangers’ mad genius scored a goal and then received his marching orders for his gestures towards the home crowd while celebrating his goal. The referee was a bit too harsh, but the Colombian’s reputation is not helping him either.
