According to a recent report by Goal.com, Chelsea FC correspondent and renowned football journalist Nizaar Kinsella has claimed that the Blues are preparing themselves for a transfer battle with Manchester United in the summer over the signing of English international winger Jadon Sancho. The report suggests that the Blues are more than willing to surpass the £72m they paid for Kepa Arizzabalaga, given their transfer ban situation.
Considering that the German outfit sold French star Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona for €105m, Sancho’s fee is sure to inflate a lot higher than that. The former Manchester City man has been the subject of a lot of speculation over the course of the campaign, and his eventual departure from Dortmund now looks inevitable. Although the likes of Liverpool were also being linked, Chelsea and United are currently said to be in the driving seat.
What Would The Selling Point At Chelsea Be For Jadon Sancho?
For starters, Frank Lampard’s youth revolution at Chelsea could be one of the main selling points for the young English winger. Players like Callum Hudson-Odoi, Fikayo Tomori, and Reece James, who never thought they’d get this opportunity going into last season, have stepped up to the plate and delivered the goods when it mattered most. The best part about it is that the gaffer doesn’t seem to be selecting his squad based on any criteria like age or experience. Given the project that currently underway at Stamford Bridge, it could be the perfect destination for him to blossom into a superstar.
While Christian Pulisic was being benched, the number of questions that were raised were unbelievable. Still, the way in which Lampard handled that situation could lure Sancho to Stamford Bridge as well. Secondly, the Dortmund star shares an excellent relationship with multiple players in the Chelsea camp, including Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi, and is a native of London city as well.
Although Chelsea haven’t been the most consistent team over the last few years, they’ve managed to make sure never to go more than two seasons without a trophy. Unlike their city rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, the Blues have always managed to deliver silverware, irrespective of the circumstances within the club. This would undoubtedly be another major attraction for the youngster, who is sure to reach great heights in the right kind of environment.
Do Chelsea Really Need to Sign Jadon Sancho?
The speedster boasts many of the qualities that are often displayed by both Willian and Pedro, and could hence be the ideal long-term replacement. Both of Chelsea’s veteran wingers are now on the wrong side of 30, and unquestionably nearing the ends of their career at the English capital. Both the stars’ contracts are set to expire at the end of the campaign, meaning that the need for reinforcements next season will be high.
Considering that the Blues already possess a strong attack-line with Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi, the addition of a talented player like Sancho would simply take their setup to the next level. His direct running is capable of inducing fear in even the strongest defenders in the world, and this signing would mix well with the philosophy that Lampard is currently trying to implement at Stamford Bridge.
