Alfredo Morelos might be making all the noise in the Premiership right now because of his recent performances in Europe. However, his Celtic counterpart Odsonne Edouard hasn’t done too bad either. The French striker has been in terrific form and just like Morelos; he has been linked with a move away.
It is fair to say that the two strikers will move on to bigger and better things in the future, but for now, both clubs would hope to retain their players until the summer especially in the middle of a tight title race. Edouard’s performance for France’s u-21 has also been eye-catching, and he is also being linked with a move to the Premier League.
Charlie Nicholas on Edouard’s price tag
Recently Rangers chairman had said (The Scottish Sun) that they wouldn’t sell Morelos for even £40m. Former Arsenal and Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas believes that if Morelos is being valued at £40m, then Edouard will be worth £50m. The Sky Sports pundit recently said, ”Rangers can dream up whatever number they like for Alfredo Morelos. Dave King has said he wouldn’t sell him for £40m in January. Well, if Morelos is worth that then Celtic must be thinking Odsonne Edouard is worth £50m. We can all come up with numbers, but unless a club is genuinely interested and comes up with a realistic bid, then it means nothing.”
Who might be worth more?
Edouard might not be scoring loads of goals like Morelos right now, but he has been as influential as the Colombian forward in Celtic’s setup. There are big question marks over Morelos’ temperament, but it seems like he has worked on that this season as he is yet to get a red card after been given his marching orders five times last season.
The French striker’s record in the crucial games and particularly in the Old Firm derbies have been impressive whereas Morelos is still searching for his first goal against the Hoops. Edouard’s market value could very well depend on how much Morelos goes for in the future and vice versa. Celtic will be well within their right to ask for more transfer funds for Edouard as he seems to be a more consistent performer overall. The Celtic forward can be a good team player with his link-up play. Moreover, he turns up on the big occasions.
However, it cannot be ignored that Morelos has managed to close the gap on him from last season after his heroics in the Europa League. Edouard is now facing a race against time to be fit against Rangers for the League Cup final and maybe by the end of the season; we could find out who commands a higher transfer fee. Until then both teams will keep on debating that they have the better no. 9.
