According to the reports from News and Star, Celtic had sent scouts to see Carlisle United’s youngster Jarrad Branthwaite in action this Saturday. Along with the Hoops, their arch-rivals Rangers are also interested. Premier League heavyweights like Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester City had also dispatched scouts.
Branthwaite is a centre back by trade, but he featured as a defensive midfielder last weekend. The defender is highly rated, and with top clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal chasing him, that is a testament to the talents of the 17-year-old defender.
Branthwaite was able to break into the senior side earlier this year, and he currently has his contract at the club until 2021. English fourth tier outfit Carlisle United have an option to extend his stay for another year. However, it will be a significant task for them to keep hold of him with top clubs now vying for his signature.
What is Branthwaite known for?
Celtic are likely seeing him as a prospect for the future as he still needs to improve on quite a few aspects. Branthwaite stands in at almost 6ft’4, and that is one of the reasons why he is strong and dominant in the air. He is also quick for a defender of that frame as he showcases decent pace.
Like most modern-day defenders, the 17-year-old is calm and composed on the ball, and he can pick a pass with ease from the back. Given his attributes on the ball, he was tried in the defensive midfield position recently. However, his strengths will be much better utilised in the centre back role.
What can go in Celtic’s favour?
With some top club vying for his signature, Celtic could be blown away by them financially. However, the young defender could be lured to move to Parkhead because he can get a much sooner path towards first-team football. At Manchester City or Arsenal, he might have to wait for his chances for a few more years. Celtic can be a good stepping stone for Branthwaite and to take his game to the next level, he needs to play regularly in the next few years.
Lennon should consider moving in for him as the defender is one of the hottest talents in English football right now. Branthwaite can also experience European football at Celtic Park and a chance to compete for trophies. Hence, Celtic also have a lot going their way in their attempt to bring in the talented defender.
