Celtic travelled to Romania to complete the formalities of the group stage in the Europa League as they were already ensured of a top place finish. The Scottish champions produced a forgettable performance as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.
The game was played at a languid pace for most parts as Cluj just needed a draw to go through and Celtic didn’t bother to turn up mentally. Craig Gordon was called into action once in the first half. Apart from that, there were no clear cut opportunities for either of the teams and the score at half time remained 0-0.
Celtic players’ minds were probably still in the dressing room after half time as they were sloppy and conceded a simple goal through a corner. Cluj added more comfort to their lead as Djokovic added the second in the 70th minute. Not much would be read into this performance because of the nature of the tie, but Lennon should be disappointed that none of his players turned up.
Here is how the Hoops fared on the evening.
Craig Gordon 5
Made one straight forward save in the first 45. Misplaced a pass but rescued the team by making a good save. Could have probably come out and gathered the low cross for the second goal.
Moritz Bauer 4
Was shrugged off the ball far too easily on a few occasions. Worked hard and put one decent ball in the box, but that was just about it.
Christopher Jullien 5
Misplaced a few passes but was strong in his duels. Substituted at half time which was clearly a move to protect him from suspension as he is a yellow away from missing the next game.
Nir Bitton 5
Passed well from the back and dealt with a few dangers well. Struggled as the game went on but can’t be blamed much for the goals which his side conceded.
Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo 3
His touch seemed to be off and failed to provide any attacking outlet. Overhit a few crosses. Lost his man from the corner and was defensively shaky.
Scott Robertson 5
The youngster impressed with his composure on the ball and he always came into positions to receive the ball from his defenders. However, defensively he was bypassed far too easily on some occasions.
Olivier Ntcham 5
Tried to take a few risks and as a result, gave the ball away in dangerous areas on a few occasions. Hardly provided any control in the middle and a below-par game overall for the captain today.
Lewis Morgan 4
Almost non-existent as Celtic hardly created any attack from the right flank. Had a few touches here and there but that was just about it.
Michael Johnston 5
Looked the most lively in the attacking third and took defenders on when he got the chance to have a go at them. Was probably trying too hard to impress as he overlooked some passes and kept on going solo.
Scott Sinclair 4
The forgotten man got a start but hardly made any meaningful contribution in the attacking third. Gave the ball away a few times as he tried to take defenders on.
Leigh Griffiths 6
Had to feed off scraps for the most part but the experienced striker showed some great endeavour and won a few 50-50 duels. Can’t be balmed much as players around him hardly offered anything.
Kristoffer Ajer 5
Was stretched in defence sometimes but did alright.
Karamoko Dembele 4
Was mostly involved in defending after coming on.
Vakoun Issouf Bayo N/A
Didn’t play enough to warrant a rating.
