Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed on their official website that Joao Moutinho has penned a new contract which will keep him at the Molineux Stadium until 2022. The Portugal international expressed his delight after signing a new deal and said (via wolves.co.uk), “It was a very easy decision because I feel very good here. It’s a big club that wants to do something good and I want to do my best to help.
“We did a great job last season and this season we’ll try to do better. That’s what we’re going to do and I’m going to try 100 per cent to help the club to improve.
“I feel very good. We won today, a very important win, and I signed a new contract. I’m very happy to help the team today and I hope to help the new for the new two, three years.”
Moutinho’s Brilliant Form In The Premier League This Season
Moutinho has enjoyed a rich vein of form for Wolves this season, and he was once again at the peak of his powers against Bournemouth on Saturday when he scored with a brilliant free-kick to ensure that his side walked away with maximum points from the Vitality Stadium.
The 33-year-old has featured in 23 matches for the West Midlands outfit this term, netting one goal and grabbing seven assists in all competitions. The Portugal international is averaging 3.4 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.8 key passes per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored). He is also vastly experienced at the international level having represented Portugal in 120 matches while scoring seven goals for his nation in the process.
What Does The Portugal International Offer On The Pitch?
Moutinho has a good football IQ and can instinctively play some excellent through-balls from midfield. He is a very accurate distributor of the ball and has a wide range of passes in his repertoire. The Portuguese playmaker is also not afraid to get stuck in with a few tackles so that he can win back possession for his team. Furthermore, the Wolves midfield ace can hit the ball with a lot of power and precision, which makes him a threat from dead-ball situations.
Moutinho Pens New Contract: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Now that Moutinho has agreed on a fresh contract with the West Midlands club, it feels like a logical move from both parties. The Portuguese talent can benefit from playing under Nuno Espirito Santo’s tutelage for a few more years before he decides to hang up his boots. He is currently in the twilight years of his playing career, but Moutinho has already proven that he has still got a few seasons left in him to play at a high level.
Wolves will also gain from keeping the veteran playmaker at the club as his experience, and winning mentality make him an ideal presence inside the dressing room. Moutinho will be able to inspire the next generation of players coming through at the Molineux Stadium, so it seems like a move that makes sense for both the player and the club.
