Leicester City have been flying high in the Premier League so far, and there have been some murmurs about them repeating their 2016 heroics. Those talks are still far off, but it cannot be ignored that they are a team to watch out for this season. Jamie Vardy has been playing some of the best football of his career, and he has been leading the line with aplomb.
Why there is a case for Leicester to sign a striker in the future?
However, there is a slight worry for the Foxes as options beyond the English striker are yet not tested. Kelechi Iheanacho is the second choice striker at the club, but he doesn’t fill many with confidence. Leicestershire Live journalist Jamie Kemble recently did a Q and A where he iterated the same sentiments.
He had written, ”Personally, I don’t think he (Rodgers) fully trusts the young striker (Iheanacho) to do a job, the lack of appearances on the pitch and even on the bench for the Nigerian tells me that.”
It’s tough to say from outside how much Rodgers trusts Iheanacho, but there is some case for the Foxes to sign a striker in January or the summer. Kemble though indicated that Ayoze Perez could be used as a striker if Vardy goes on to miss some games.
Rodgers should nevertheless look to sign one forward for the future if not in January, and they should look to go after Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard. The French striker blossomed under Rodgers on loan initially, and Celtic later decided to sign him permanently for a record fee.
What can Edouard offer?
Celtic are unlikely to sell him in January given his importance, but the Foxes could lure him atleast in the summer if they manage to book their place in the Champions League. Edouard has got everything to his game which a striker needs as he has impressive strength and is also a decent dribbler. He can hold up play well and along with that, he can make runs between the channels.
The Frenchman can go on eye-catching solo runs, and he can take defenders by surprise with his pace. His movement in the final third is also impressive, and he can link up play well.
The striker might need some time to settle in the English top-flight, and he can learn a lot by being the understudy to Jamie Vardy initially. Edouard is still just 21, and he has a huge room for improvements. Rodgers going after Edouard would certainly not go down well with the Celtic fans. Still, just like the laws of nature, the smaller fish are eaten by the bigger fish, and the Foxes seem to be the bigger fish at the moment especially with the kind of season they are having.
