Clubs like Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have been linked with Rangers’ striker Alfredo Morelos. High flying Leicester City who are currently second on the table were also recently linked with a swoop for him. However, Rangers have been given some relief as reports from the Daily Record indicates that the Foxes are not going to make a January move for the Colombian striker.
Leicester City can be considered as a club who are slightly ahead in the pecking order over the likes of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Therefore there could have been a higher chance of Morelos leaving if the Foxes made a concrete approach. But now it has been revealed that Leicester will not make a move for the Colombian international.
Rangers’ adamant stance on Morelos
Rangers’ Sporting Director Ross Wilson recently revealed that the club is not looking to sell Morelos in January. He had said (BBC), ”We understand that, like every other club in world football, there comes a point when players have to move on to something else for a variety of reasons. We’ll be no different to that, but it’s certainly not on the horizon in January.”
However, they cannot be out of danger yet as the likes of Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa have the means to blow Rangers away with a top offer. Morelos’ agent also recently made some unwanted noise as he urged possible suitors to come in for the striker before his price skyrockets.
Why a move away cannot be ignored?
With the club’s Sporting Director and Gerrard claiming that Morelos is going to stay, there is a good chance that the Colombian will stay put at Ibrox. However, we have seen things change quickly in the transfer market before.
For instance, Gerrard was asked the question in early August whether Rangers will have the finances to sign Kent permanently to which the manager said that they are unlikely to go for his permanent signing. Even when the Bears made it to the Europa League main draw by late August, Gerrard had said that there had been no change in their stance for Kent. A few days later, Kent went on to move to Ibrox for £7m on the last day of the transfer window.
Hence, even though the manager and the Sporting director might be denying Morelos’ sale right now, it could be a different matter altogether when one of the clubs comes up with a concrete offer of £20-25m for the forward. Rangers recently posted a loss of just over £11m and the financial side of the things cannot be ignored.
The decision is not only going to rest on Gerrard and Wilson’s shoulder, and the club hierarchy will also be involved if a top offer comes in. Hence, nothing can be counted out at this moment. For now, it should be some sort of relief for the Bears that the exhilarating Leicester are not interested in the 23-year-old forward.
