Recently reports from the Scottish Sun had emerged that Rangers will eye a move for Aberdeen’s midfielder Lewis Ferguson if they go on to lose Glen Kamara in January. It is believed that Rangers are bracing themselves for interest in their Finland international who has looked impeccable in the last few games.
Ferguson is currently an u-21 Scotland international, and he has established himself in Aberdeen’s lineup. A move to Rangers will undoubtedly be a step up for him. However, his father Derek Ferguson, who had played for Scotland and Rangers before has stated that he is happy with Lewis staying at Aberdeen for now.
Derek Ferguson on Lewis being happy at Aberdeen
Derek Ferguson said (Daily Record), ”I’ve heard nothing (On Rangers rumours). All I can say is that he’s really happy up there at the moment. The coaching staff have been absolutely top drawer, not just Derek McInnes but the guys in the background. He’s well looked after, and if we are talking about development, there’s no better place than where he is.”
One can understand why Ferguson senior would want his kid to stay at Aberdeen for now as he is playing regularly for the Dons. At Rangers, there will be plenty of competition for places even if the Bears go on to lose Glen Kamara in the transfer market. So for development, Lewis will be better of staying at Aberdeen.
However, if Rangers put in a sizeable bid in January, then things can quickly change. The aspect of having a chance to play European football cannot be ignored.
What should Rangers do?
Ferguson is yet not a finished article, and he shouldn’t be seen as a straight replacement for Kamara. If Kamara leaves then Rangers will likely use more of their current options like Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield or Andy King to replace him in the starting eleven.
Ross McCrorie who is currently on loan to Portsmouth will also make a claim for a midfield spot when his loan spell expires next season. Gerrard can go on to sign Ferguson, but he shouldn’t expect miracles from him straight away, and he should primarily be seen as a squad player.
Rangers, therefore, should look to keep hold of Kamara in January given that a lot is resting on this season. The Gers are matching Celtic in the title race so far and losing a quality midfielder like Kamara can hamper their options in the middle. However, it cannot be ignored that clubs like Crystal Palace and Brighton will have the financial muscle to lure Kamara. Gerrard though needs to convince his star man to stay up until the end of the season as he is creating something special at Rangers right now.
