According to the Express, Bruno Fernandes has rejected a new contract extension at Sporting Lisbon. As a result, Tottenham Hotspur are on red alert, and a potential move in the January transfer window could be on the horizon. However, they could face stiff competition from Manchester United in pursuit of Fernandes, who was linked with both the clubs in the summer as well (via the Express).
Fernandes is not a one-season wonder
Fernandes was one of the best players in Europe’s top seven leagues last term. He was, in fact, the most prolific midfielder, netting 32 goals in all competitions. On top of that, he registered 13 assists in the league, helping Sporting CP finish in the Liga NOS.
His performances attracted the interest of a host of top clubs across Europe. But, it was a fair argument that the playmaker could have been a one-season wonder.
Fernandes, however, has silenced those critics by replicating last season’s performances in this new campaign. The Portuguese international has already scored five goals in eight matches. He also netted twice in the UEFA Europa League and has overall been involved in 14 goals in just as many matches in all competitions.
Moreover, the ex-Sampdoria man played a key role behind Portugal’s triumph in the UEFA Nations League in the summer. He is, therefore, certainly not a one-season wonder.
A perfect replacement for Eriksen?
Tottenham fans are worried they might lose Christian Eriksen sooner than expected. The Dane’s contract in north London expires at the end of the season. But, the club could cash in on him in January, with a host of top teams interested in his services.
Nevertheless, Spurs had to secure a replacement one way or another. And Fernandes, to that end, could be an intriguing option. The Sporting CP captain, just like Eriksen, is known for his proficiency from set-pieces. A large portion of his created chances has originated from either free-kicks or corners.
Furthermore, Fernandes has a knack for scoring goals, which potentially makes him an upgrade over Eriksen. It is, however, fair to point out that the Portuguese talent isn’t as sharp when it comes to one-touch football and linking up with teammates in the final third. In this case, it could be imperative as it was the connection between Eriksen, Son and Kane that made Tottenham one of the most feared teams in Europe.
But in hindsight, Fernandes has the quality to replace the Tottenham contract rebel, though a lot will depend on whether or not he can manage to replicate his performances in the Premier League.
