According to A Bola, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the services of Alejandro Grimaldo. The SL Benfica defender has attracted the interest of a host of clubs across Europe, including Napoli and Spurs as well as Arsenal. However, it is believed that he is valued around €40m, with his current contract at Benfica expiring in 2021.
Grimaldo’s success at Benfica
A graduate of the famed La Masia academy in Barcelona, Grimaldo initially moved to Benfica in January 2016 in search of regular game-time. He did endure a slow start to his career in Portugal, notably making only two league appearances during the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign.
It was followed by 14 appearances the following season. That was the season Grimaldo truly made an impression in the first-team as he became a regular during the final phase of the campaign. And unsurprisingly, the Spaniard became Benfica’s first-choice left-back during the 2017/18 campaign, making 24 league appearances.
During his almost four year spell at Benfica, Grimaldo has already featured in 131 matches in all competitions. He has flourished as well, notably registering as many as 12 assists last season as the Eagles lifted the Liga NOS title. He has started the ongoing campaign on a positive note as well, sealing four assists in nine games.
Is Grimaldo a viable target for Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of reinforcements in the fullback department. While Kieran Trippier’s departure in the summer has left a huge void at right-back, the club has faced similar problems on the opposite end. Danny Rose hasn’t been consistent while Ben Davies has barely had any sort of impact.
Hence, Grimaldo’s potential addition to Spurs could make a lot of sense. The Spaniard could be an upgrade over both Rose and Davies given his technical superiority. That means he can effectively help Spurs play out from the back while also going forward and linking up with teammates.
Grimaldo is also known for his ability to play one-touch football, which often becomes useful in the fast-paced nature of the Premier League. Moreover, the 24-year-old is an excellent passer of the ball and has attained a pass completion rate of 83% so far this season. Hence, he can undoubtedly revamp the left-back slot.
That being said, Tottenham should look to negotiate with Benfica regarding the hefty €40m asking price as they will potentially have to secure replacements for other key players like Christian Eriksen.
