According to a recent report by The Metro, La Liga superclub Real Madrid are said to be lining up a bid for Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling in the summer, with a view of him potentially helping fill the void left by the unexpected departure of Cristiano Ronaldo a couple of years ago. It has been suggested that Los Blancos are preparing a bid in the region of £70m, that would also see Welsh superstar Gareth Bale make his way across the channel as part of a player-plus-cash deal.
Are Real Madrid Paying Too Much In This Case?
For many years now, Spanish giants Real Madrid have always set the standard with their transfer business. The signings of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Gareth Bale were inspired acquisitions, to say the least. Despite this, the amount of money they’ve spent on these stars has never dropped, maintaining an ever-increasing ratio of transfer fees. The latest big-money signing – Eden Hazard, was also at the peak of his game when he joined Madrid.
A bid for Raheem Sterling would make complete sense for Los Blancos at this time. Although Hazard has begun to click, he is yet to reach the heights he achieved in West London. Raheem Sterling has been in the form of his life over the last couple of seasons, and this seems like the perfect time for them to make their move. After Lionel Messi and Ronaldo, Raheem Sterling is arguably the deadliest player in world football today, and quality like that only comes at a price.
What Would Raheem Sterling Add To Real Madrid?
The speedster’s attributes need no introduction to anyone who has the slightest clue about football because, in full flow, he can be nearly impossible to stop. Unbelievably fast on the ball, the Englishman has more recently added a cutting edge in front of goal to his game as well, making him an even better player than he already was. This season, he’s already notched up 13 goals in all competitions, including 4 in 3 matches in the Champions League.
Although Hazard could emulate the finesse and class that Ronaldo offered to Zidane setup, he lacks the dynamism to really take control of a game. This is where Raheem Sterling could prosper. His link-up play with a player like Hazard would be the stuff of dreams for Galacticos fans, and with a squad as strong as Madrid’s, the level of dominance they achieve will be unprecedented.
Why Real Madrid Must Make This Deal A Reality In The Summer
Gareth Bale’s long spell at Real Madrid could be drawing to a close if this deal has to take shape. In all fairness, it’s better for the Welshman’s general game to be in an atmosphere where his attributes and skills are valued. At Madrid, he’s struggled to make an impact over the years, and has always played second fiddle to Ronaldo. Even with the Portuguese now gone, the Welshman has found it hard to break into Zidane’s team.
Real Madrid are clearly still recovering from the Ronaldo exit, as can be seen from their inability to secure a single trophy last season, barring the FIFA Club World Cup. They will be looking into the future with a lot of hope, and bringing in a player of Sterling’s pedigree will go a long way towards that. If an opportunity to sign the Manchester City Star does arise for Los Blancos in the summer, then they must take it, irrespective of the price.
