According to reports from Defensa Central as cited by Liverpool Echo, Real Madrid are interested in signing Liverpool’s fullback Andy Robertson. It is claimed that they have been scouting the Scottish international and they are seeing him as a replacement for Marcelo.
However, the same report adds that Liverpool’s valuation of their left-back will be a ‘big obstacle’ for Real Madrid. Liverpool managed to get Robertson on a new contract in January this year which would keep him at the club until 2024. Therefore it should be no surprise to see the Champions League holders valuing him highly.
Real Madrid’s options at left-back
It remains to be seen how much truth there is in the news, but we feel that Los Blancos have no chance to sign the Scotland captain. Moreover, it is slightly surprising to see Real Madrid being interested in another left-back when they signed Ferland Mendy for big money this summer. If Madrid are still interested in Robertson, then it might suggest that Zidane isn’t happy with his summer signing.
Marcelo has been the mainstay at left-back for Real Madrid for some years now. He has been part of four Champions League winning side and has played a tremendous role for them in defence. However, it cannot be ignored that his career is on a downward trajectory right now.
The 31-year-old started in 21 games in the La Liga last season which was an indication that he wasn’t at his best anymore. This season, he has started in five games in the Spanish top division so far. However, he had to miss some games due to injury.
Why is Robertson one of the best in the business?
Robertson is arguably the best left-back in the world right now, and his performance on both ends of the pitch has been exemplary. His energy to drive the ball forward with intensity makes him a stand out option. He also has a brilliant left foot through which he can deliver deadly crosses from the left.
However, what really sets him apart from other modern-day attack-minded fullbacks is that Robertson is a smart defender as well and he can hold his own at the back. His commitment and determination are never in question as he always gives his 100% on the pitch. There is no doubt that he would improve any team in world football right now, including Real Madrid.
However, it will take something monumental on Real Madrid’s part to lure him in the future. Moreover, they had already spent €48m on Mendy in the summer, so we don’t see this move going through.
