Rangers have made wholesale changes to their squad ever since Steven Gerrard took over at the club. The Bears have been clever with their signings as they have brought in quite a few players on loan and using the free-agent market. Moreover, they have signed some exceptionally experienced campaigners, and they have done well so far.
Allan McGregor was brought in last summer on a two-year deal, and he has been magnificent for Gerrard. It wouldn’t be too far fetched to say that he is the best goalkeeper in Scotland right now. Jermain Defoe is another player who has taken the Premiership by storm. He joined on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth. The veteran English striker is currently the top scorer in the Premiership.
And then there is Steven Davis. The Southampton man has been nothing sort of a revelation playing in a deeper role in midfield. More than just a midfield disruptor, he orchestrates plays from midfield. His one-touch passing and movement often allow Rangers to dominate the midfield battle and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that he is currently the Pirlo of this Rangers side.
All the three mentioned players’ contracts are set to expire in the summer of 2020 and Gerrard will have a huge decision to make soon. The English manager recently made it very clear that he wants them around for longer. Therefore a deal for all of them could be on the cards.
Gerrard on new deals for the three veterans
Gerrard recently said (Daily Record), “I don’t look at age. I look on form. When you’re dealing with players of this age, you’re never going to offer a two or three-year deal. But at the same time, you don’t want to lose them as they’re so valuable to us. They are very much in the plan. They’re on top form, and we want them around longer.”
“They’re massive. Can you imagine how difficult my job would be if those three were leaving in the summer or knocked on my door and said they don’t want to play any more?”
A no-brainer for Gerrard?
The likes of Mcgregor, Defoe and Davis knows what it takes to succeed at the top level. Moreover, they must have had a significant impact off the pitch as well. Gerrard had praised Defoe earlier on how the former Tottenham Hotspur striker guides the young forwards at the club.
We think that Defoe must have had some impact on Morelos as well because the Colombian has looked a lot calmer this season. The manager had hinted that Defoe could take up a player cum coach role in the future.
McGregor and Davis are currently the best players in their position at Rangers. It would be right for Gerrard to tie them up on fresh contracts. We think that all three players should be handed a year-long extension at the Ibrox. Being a goalkeeper, McGregor might be in line to get a two-year contract.
