Alfredo Morelos is quite clearly one of the most significant assets which Rangers have currently got. The Colombian striker has been in a brilliant form once again as he has already bagged 17 goals in all competitions so far. There is almost an inevitability that he will move on to bigger and better things in the future.
The striker has garnered interest from various Premier League clubs so far. Morelos has also maintained that playing in the English top-flight is his dream. Now the 23-year-old went on to drop a big bombshell on Rangers as he indicated that he would be open to moving even in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Morelos on interest from other clubs
Morelos said to Blu Radio (via Daily Record), ”So far there is nothing official. There is a lot of speculation of teams things I’ve read on Twitter and stuff, but there’s been nothing concrete, but if there is then I will let you know. I just need to continue doing things to the best of my ability, and we will see now in the winter transfer window if there’s the chance to make a bigger move, to a much better and more competitive league.”
The Colombian international’s contract currently runs until 2023 but it quite likely that he won’t see the end of his contract at the Ibrox. Gerrard cannot afford to lose him in the middle of the season given that they are in for a very tight title race. Various reports say that Rangers are valuing Morelos at £20m.
Even if the valuation is met, finding the right replacement in January could be a tough ask, and then the new player will need time to adapt to the way Rangers play. Therefore selling Morelos even for £20m in January should be a strict no-no.
What now for Gerrard?
Gerrard will need to bring his man-management skills into play if a concrete offer from a Premier League club comes in for the player in January. He needs to make Morelos realise that he is on the cusp of something special with Rangers as they are trying to end their title drought.
The striker leaving midway through the campaign will surely leave a sour taste in the mouths of the Rangers supporters. Therefore he should at least stick with the Bears until the summer. Moreover, if he continues with his impressive form and gets Rangers to their 55th Premiership title, then his valuation could go up further in the summer. Maybe some heavyweight clubs might become interested in him after that.
