According to the reports from Daily Record, Rangers are close to offering 18-year-old Cameron Gascoigne a chance to move to Ibrox. The youngster is the nephew of England legend Paul Gascoigne. Gascoigne recently came to Ibrox on a second trial after impressing in his first trial.
Cameron recently became a free agent after Newcastle United released him in the summer. The forward scored against Partick Thistle in a 3-0 win for the Rangers development squad earlier this week. After impressing in the latest games, it is believed that he could be offered a permanent deal at Ibrox.
Paul Gascoigne is a legend in the blue part of Glasgow as he won two Premiership titles with them in his three-year stint at Glasgow. Cameron will also have to contain himself with living in the shadows of the Ibrox legend, and he will always be under extra scrutiny whenever he steps up to play.
However, he seems to have won over the coaches and trainers at Rangers as they are looking to hand him a professional deal. Hopefully, the agreement is not based on sentiments. It seems like the young striker is performing well and he will look to walk in his uncle’s footsteps if he goes on to join Rangers.
Not an easy path towards first-team football
Gascoigne will obviously have to go through the vigours of playing in youth teams and development sides before he can get close to playing first-team football. Rangers currently have two fantastic strikers in the form of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, and it would take someone special from the academy to break into the senior team.
The Bears also have talented youngsters like Zak Rudden and Dapo Mebude. Mebude was given a chance to make his debut last season as he played against Kilmarnock in May. The 18-year-old is currently a Scotland u-19 international as well. Rudden is presently on loan with League Two outfit Plymouth Argyle where he is getting some much-needed playing minutes under his belt.
So Gascoigne’s task will be cut out if he wants to make it close to Rangers’ senior team. Hopefully, the youngster will keep on working hard and improving. And more importantly, Rangers need to keep the sentiments aspect aside before handing him a deal. It remains to be seen now whether the agreement will go over the line or not as the latest update mentions that the Bears are close to handing him a contract.
