According to the reports from the Scottish Sun, Rangers have earmarked Aberdeen’s midfielder Lewis Ferguson as a possible replacement for Glen Kamara. It is believed that Gerrard is bracing himself for offers for Finland international Kamara who has been in terrific for the Bears.
Ferguson signed a new contract with the Dons which will keep him at the Pittodrie up until 2024. However, Rangers can have significant money to spend if Kamara is sold in January. Gerrard recently indicated that other club’s representatives have been coming at Rangers’ director box to see the former Arsenal midfielder in action.
20-year-old Ferguson is currently a Scotland u-21 international, and he is rated highly in the Scottish football circuit. The midfielder has made 18 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists. Ferguson moved to Aberdeen for just £220,000 from Hamilton Academical around one and half year back. Since then, he has established himself in midfield in Derek McInnes’ setup.
Losing Kamara will definitely be a big blow for Rangers, but it cannot be ignored that Premier League clubs who have been linked with him have the financial muscle to lure him in January. Kamara started the ongoing season slowly, but he managed to turn up some of his best performances in recent weeks.
What can Ferguson offer?
Ferguson can play as an attacking midfielder or even as a box to box player. His standout attribute is his strength and energy as he is always up for a physical battle. The Dons man is quick and agile and can pick out a pass to open up the opposition defence. However, there is no doubt that Ferguson is not yet a finished product and Rangers will have to be patient with him initially to get the best out of him.
Will Rangers have enough cover if they sell Kamara?
Ferguson is unlikely to come as good as Kamara straightaway, and Gerrard should look to keep hold of all his key players in January. However, if an eye-catching offer comes, then the gaffer has enough options in his roster. Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield and Andy King can play in the middle in place of Kamara.
Ross McCrorie, who is on loan to Portsmouth, is also a decent midfield option who will join the club next summer. Ferguson is a talented upcoming young player, but Gerrard and Co shouldn’t expect him to start performing miracles straight away if they sign him as a replacement for Kamara.
