According to a report by the Chronicle Live, Premier League outfit Newcastle United are said to be keen on keeping star man Jetro Willems at St.James’ Park beyond the end of the season. His year-long loan runs out in the summer, but it has been suggested that a buy-on clause was embedded into the contract.
The Dutchman’s performances have caught the eye of the Toon Army, and they will be looking to keep him in Tyneside for a long time to come. Originally an Eintracht Frankfurt player, the Dutchman has been important for the Magpies this season, putting up strong displays in more than one fixture.
The Emergence Of Jetro Willems
A product of the Sparta Rotterdam academy, the 25-year-old began to make a name for himself in football, after making the switch to PSV. The Dutch giants identified him as a potential star and signed him up in the summer of 2011. He spent six years at PSV and even developed into one of the fan-favourites for his strong and direct running.
He played 192 times for PSV – a period during which he managed to pick up 12 goals and 34 assists as well. It was because of his performances that budding Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt decided to make a move for the Dutchman in 2017. Over two season, the 25-year-old played 65 times for the German club, but never managed to find the net.
Does Jetro Willems’ Skill-Set Suit This Newcastle Team?
The Dutchman is effectively a flying full-back who defends adeptly when required but prefers to dash forward at every possible opportunity. The Premier League is very much built around the overlapping full-back now, and the presence of Willems has helped Newcastle’s cause massively on that front this season.
He works hard off the ball and shows intelligence with his positioning in the box as well. He has slotted into this Newcastle setup quite fast and even managed to announce himself by scoring a league goal for the Magpies. He has made multiple contributions already this season, having picked up two assists from his eight league games so far.
Why Newcastle United Must Sign Jetro Willems Permanently
The Magpies have been suffering from a lack of creativity in wide areas over the last couple of seasons. Although they lost arguably their most dangerous player in Ayoze Perez in the summer, the additions of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have bolstered Steve Bruce’s squad. Like the duo mentioned above, Willems has been a breath of fresh air to the Newcastle team this season, and they need to keep their man beyond the end of the current campaign.
