Rangers faced off against Heart of Midlothian at Hampden Park earlier today hoping to progress into the final of the Scottish League Cup. The Glaswegian outfit began the contest on the front foot but struggled to break down the Hearts defence. Filip Helander finally made the breakthrough just before half-time when he scored from close range.
Alfredo Morelos doubled his team’s lead early in the second half which put some daylight between the two sides. It was Morelos who struck again in the 62nd minute to put the game to bed. The encounter ended with the final scoreline of 3-0 in favour of Steven Gerrard’s players.
Let’s take a look at how each Rangers player performed during the match against Hearts.
GK: Allan McGregor – 6/10
He hardly had anything to do in the game and kept a comfortable clean sheet at Hampden Park.
RB: James Tavernier – 7/10
His form has been questionable of late, but he put in a matured display down the right side today. The Rangers skipper set-up Morelos early in the second half with an accurate low cross.
CB: Connor Goldson – 6.5/10
He started the game a bit slow but put in a brilliant shift once he got settled into the rhythm of the match.
CB: Filip Helander – 7.5/10
Helander put in a commanding performance inside his own half and managed to make the all-important breakthrough when he found the back of the net just before the half-time break.
LB: Borna Barisic – 7/10
The Rangers left-back put in a lively display down the left flank. He whipped in some inviting crosses from the wide areas and was unfortunate not to have gotten an assist during the game.
CM: Steven Davis – 8/10
He did well to establish the Glaswegian side’s dominance in the middle of the park. Davis led by example and put in an impressive display as the anchorman in midfield.
CM: Ryan Jack – 7/10
The Scottish midfield ace did everything but score against Hearts today. He is slowly finding a level of consistency on the field as he often seems to deliver whenever his teammates need him the most.
CM: Glen Kamara – 7/10
He managed to get a start this weekend and made the most out of his opportunity by putting in a brave performance during the contest.
RM: Ryan Kent – 8/10
The ex-Coventry City winger was a real menace for the Hearts defenders as his pace and trickery made him a potent threat in the final third.
ST: Alfredo Morelos – 9/10
Morelos scored a brace and set-up Helander as well. His consistency and prolific nature have made him an integral figure for the Gers, so it is no surprise to see him do well today.
LM: Oluwaseyi Ojo – 6.5/10
The Rangers speedster was average in the first half but put in a better performance in the second.
Substitutes:
RM: Joe Arribo – 6/10
He put in a nice cameo off the bench.
CM: Scott Arfield – 6/10
Arfield came on to see out the win for the Gers.
ST: Jermaine Defoe – N/A
The ex-Premier League forward did not have enough time to influence the game.
